I began my career as a sculptor for Madame Tussauds Waxworks in London, where I learned about portraiture and worked with clay, wax and fibreglass, acquiring skills which I still use today. Whilst at Tussauds, I was asked to illustrate a children’s picture book, which was the perfect opportunity for me to implement my keen interest in story telling through drawing.
One book led to another and I found myself pursuing a new direction. This included creating my course in children's book illustration at Central Saint Martins - UAL, where I found that teaching was something that I enjoyed, and twenty years on still do.
As drawing has always underpinned everything I make, I found myself gravitating towards printmaking; in particular relief and intaglio. My aim was to create a collection of Koi prints to complement my large body of Koi watercolours, painted some years earlier. I selected relief printing for this project as it allowed me to achieve the marks and textures required for my subjects, ranging from bold flowing lines to finely detailed scales and leaves. Printmaking has now become my principle focus.
My studio is based in London, UK.
