This series of works include Woodcuts and Lino prints. Often the two media are combined. I use the reduction block process which means that with each new colour added to the print a bit more of the block is taken away. To achieve a good range of colours multiple blocks are employed, but each of these must be carefully registered with each other, so that the colours fall into the correct place, like the pieces of a puzzle. I prefer to print the woodcuts by hand using Japanese Gampi paper and a Baren, rather than a press. For the Lino prints I use an Albion press which makes the editioning run smoothly. Depending on the nature of the project I may opt for differing editioning styles. Sometimes I like the crisp rigour of fixed limited edition. At other times I prefer the controlled mutability of limited, but variable editions. And then there are occasions when the subject lends itself best to monoprints where I can enjoy greater design freedom and add elements such as embossing or gilding. |
