Children's Book Illustration - I

Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design
University of the Arts - London

This course is an introduction to a variety of aspects relevant to the illustration and narration of children's books.

The course is aimed at those who enjoy and are comfortable with drawing, as you will communicate your ideas through illustration. As you progress through the exercises you will become familiar with storyboards, text and image placement, and the use of different media. You will also model in 3D, to allow you to visualise and draw your character from any angle or position.

The exploration of illustration techniques, both familiar and less familiar, will be an important feature of the sessions, as illustrators are always trying to find new and inventive ways to create images.

Students who attend this course often come from wide ranging international backgrounds, bringing with them a rich mix of experience and ability from which the whole class (and tutor) benefits.

Children's Book Illustration - Advanced

Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design
University of the Arts - London

This course is an extension of Children's Book Illustration I.

You will explore in greater depth how image and text work together in picture books. Working alone and in pairs, you will progress through a series of drawing exercises. These are aimed at furthering your understanding of the separate, yet synergistic, roles played by images and text in communicating the narrative.

You will also develop a story starting from a cryptic beginning, by creating convincing characters, in 2D and 3D, who will narrate your script. In addition, books without narratives referring to shapes, colours or numbers, are also investigated by looking at the specific techniques used by illustrators. As most of the exercises are completed through drawing, you will benefit most if you are confident in your drawing ability.

Getting Your Children's Book Published

Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design
University of the Arts - London

This course is for those who already have a well developed illustration style and possibly an idea for a children's picture book. Drawing skills are crucial, especially when it comes to communicating with publishers during the early stages of story-boarding and presentation of roughs.

The course structure allows you to naturally progress through the stages necessary for the creation of a picture book, which is 'ready' to show to a publisher or an agent.

The first half of the course will take you through a series of exercises designed to stimulate picture book ideas, either narrative or non-narrative. For the remainder of the sessions, you will be expected to work on your own project, receiving individual feedback during the course of each week.

Given the course duration, you will not be expected to complete your book, rather the aim is to equip you with the skills and confidence that will enable you to progress independently.
